Unit two Evaluation
In this project I feel I have improved in using colours and their proportions within my work. I feel that I have been successful in bringing my research (from own photos) into my sampling in weave and in knit by choosing correct yarns for colour and textures as well as creating contrasts, found in the photos, within my samples.
I started my project with a ‘shabby-chic’ theme, using these colours for the start of my weave. I then developed this into the idea of placing period antique furniture in unexpected environments to create a contrast in style, textures and colour.
The first photos I took were fairly successful in terms of contrast in textures, however I felt this idea needed to be pushed further and later in my project I took a series of photos which were far more successful. I used these photos as inspiration mainly in my knit sampling.
Antoni Tapies work as well as an image from Fiona Curran had influenced my photography as I looked at their composition and placement of objects, having one focus of detail. This has definitely helped my work in this project as this contextual research has led to photos and then samples which have worked really well.
I have realised during this project that my work is most successful when I take images and focus on the colours, sourcing yarns and materials of the correct texture and colour and doing wrappings to get the correct proportions. I then use this throughout my sampling and making process. I feel my work has become more successful towards the end of the project as I have used this technique.
Even though I feel the outcome of this project has been good, there are still areas which I need to work on in future projects. I have thought of my pictures in this project as a kind of drawing and I have also done graphite drawings from the photos, but the mark making drawing session made me realise that I don’t need to be too literal about my drawing all the time. I would like to further work with mark making, but still in the delicate way that I do my drawing, building layers of marks and colours and this will make it easier to relate my samples to.
